It’s Official- Murphy’s All (Double) Talk on Spending Reform

  • The “Old” Murphy on Earmark Reform:  “U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy (D-Cheshire) said this week that if earmarks for congressional appropriations are not eliminated, then they should at least be more ‘transparent’.”  (“Murphy Targets Earmarks”.  4 January 2007.  Litchfield County Times)
  • The “Newer” Murphy on Earmark Reform:  “Rep. Christopher Shays , R-4, is the only member of the Connecticut delegation willing to divulge his earmarks…”  (“Legislators Mute Over Earmarks”.  25 June 2007.  The Connecticut Post)
  • The “Newest” Murphy on Earmark Reform:
    • BLOCKED Republican motion to form “Joint Select Committee on Earmark Reform” and impose an earmark moratorium until a solution was agreed upon.  (House Roll No. 32, 7 February 2008)

Danbury—  State Senator David Cappiello, candidate for Congress in Connecticut’s Fifth District, released the following statement on Chris Murphy’s repeated failure to live up to his promises on earmark reform.

“Once again, Congressman Murphy has broken a promise he made to the people of Connecticut,” said Cappiello.  “Instead of standing up for the taxpayers and working to finally end the earmark insanity in Congress, Murphy worked to block reforming the process.  This, unfortunately, is not a surprise- Murphy refused torelease his earmark requests in full last year.”

Murphy had previously expressed opposition to earmarks in the House, calling for elimination ortransparency of these special funding requests.

“This is just the latestin the long line of broken promises from Chris Murphy.  Whether it’s raising money from thesame PAC’s and lobbyists he criticizes, or missing critical votes on mortgageand ethics reform without any reasonable explanation, Chris Murphy has given the phrase ‘double-talk’ a whole new meaning.  The voters of the Fifth District deserve a Congressman who will actually work to clean up the spending mess in Washington.  I’ll fight tooth and nail to do it,because tax dollars belong to the taxpayers, not politicians.”
