Murphy on Illegal Immigration: “Both Ways, Please”

Congressmansays one thing, does another on immigration reform

  • Murphy on Immigration Reform:  “We also need to revisit immigration reform.  A lot of us are prepared to do reform in piecemeal fashion…”  (Whipple, “Murphy Assesses His 1st Year in Congress, New Britain Herald, 19 December 2007)

  • Murphy on drivers licenses for illegal aliens:  “I get a little nervous about handing out documentation, particularly drivers licenses as Governor Spitzer has proposed in New York, to undocumented workers.”  (“Where We Live” interview with Chris Murphy, NPR Radio, 7 December 2007)

  • But Murphy voted against denying drivers licenses to illegal aliens in CT THREE TIMES (Connecticut State Senate: 29 May 2003, SB-930 “Sequence Number 391”; 11 May 05, HB-5446, “Sequence Number 211”; 2 June 2005, HB-6722 “Sequence Number 390)

Danbury—  State Senator David Cappiello, candidate forCongress in Connecticut’s Fifth District, today issued the following statementregarding Congressman Chris Murphy’s recent calls for immigration reform to beenacted by Congress in 2008.

“If Congressman Murphy is really ready to tackle the issueof illegal immigration even by ‘piecemeal’ means, he should have taken thethree opportunities he was given to deny drivers licenses to illegal aliens inthe Connecticut State Senate.  Nowthat he’s in Congress, he’s calling for immigration reform and denying thathe’s in favor of giving licenses to people here illegally, despite his votingrecord.  Murphy can’t have it bothways, and Connecticut deserves a leader who will make the tough choices, not aCongressman who is politically expedient. He should tell his constituents what exactly his plans for reform are.”
