Republican-American, 9 July 2008
For 40 years, ultraliberal Democrats controlled the House of Representatives. Under Minority Leader Bob Michel, the House was content to gather the crumbs tossed to them to keep them quiet. Then Newt Gingrich's Republican Contract with America 1994 changed everything. The GOP made a number of specific promises to the voters if it given control of the House. It worked, and the big-government liberals were thrown out. Rep. Christopher Murphy, D-5th District, is all over the news these days speaking out on high energy prices and offering his leftist "solutions" such as less consumption. If there is a living brain cell remaining among the Republican Party ledership, they will come out with a "Energy Contract with America" whereby if elected the GOP would force the development of the nation's available oil and gas reserves. Gasoline at $4.50 a gallon is bad enough but when winter comes, America will see the real, life-and-death effects of the Democrats' anti-growth policies. If the GOP misses this opportunity, they and America will deserve the fatal consequences. Stanley Masayda Watertown |
